Pokemon Go is sweeping the nation – nay, the world! – and everyone seems to be having a go at playing the mobile app-based game.
The first time you visit a gym – the venues where users can battle each other’s Pokemon – as a level-five player, you will no longer be turned away but welcomed inside, but first you must make a choice.
That choice is for which team you will represent in all gym battles from now until the end times. There are three to choose from –Instinct, Mystic and Valor; ‘yellow’, ‘blue’ and ‘red’ respectively.
As far Pokemon self-identification goes, this is as big as it gets. Don’t make the wrong choice, read our guide to each team below and see where you think you’ll fit in best.
Team Instinct
Poor yellow team. If you were being unkind, you might say they have a victim complex. But then, this writer isn’t unkind – he’s a fully paid-up Instinct-er himself!
Glaring conflict of interests notwithstanding, the Instinct team on Pokemon Go have already cultivated their image as the plucky underdogs and it’s always a mild shock to see your local gym clad in their yellow regalia.
Suitably, then, their mascot is the electric legendary bird, Zapdos.
Instinct does what it says on the tin – the team is about trusting Pokemon to be themselves and letting their unique talent shine through.
Leader Spark tries to pitch you with these profound words:
Pokemon are creatures with excellent intuition. I bet the secret to their intuition is related to how they’re hatched. Come and join my team. You never lose when you trust your instinct!
If all that tickles your fancy, get on the yellow team.
Team Mystic
They say that you’re never more than six feet from a member of Team Mystic and they do seem to have control of almost every gym you come across.
Like those born-and-bred Londoners who inexplicably follow Manchester United in the football, following the blue team in Pokemon Go is easy, fun and it’s what everyone else seems to be doing.
And who wouldn’t want legendary ice bird Articuno as their mascot? Beyond the slick PR sheen Team Mystic are all about studying Pokemon and figuring out scientifically how to be the very best; an admirable endeavour.

The wisdom of Pokemon is immeasurably deep. I’m researching why it is that they evolve. My team? With our calm analysis of every situation, we can’t lose!
If that floats your boat, you’d better pick the blue team.
Team Valor
If battling is your favourite part of Pokemon, you would do well to join Team Valor.
The red team’s ethos is that you’ll become the best Pokemon trainer in town by battling over and over, tuning up your skills in endless combat.
That may be why some of Team Valor’s gyms seem to be home to some of the meanest looking high-combat-powered Pokemon in the game. Where did you get so much candy? How are you doing this? Maybe if you join, your teammates can fill you in on the secrets.
Valor’s mascot is the legendary fire bird, Moltres and their leader isCandela. Here’s her sell:

If you can live with the fact that your team name is an incorrectly spelt abstract noun, make sure you join the red team.
